Biography I was born in Hong Kong in 1986, the year before the handover negotiations concluded and everyone started quietly deciding what their futures would look like. My father was a practical man in a practical business, and I grew up understanding that the world runs on relationships; who you know, who trusts you, who owes you a favor, and who you owe one back. I learned this before I learned anything a school could teach me, which is perhaps why school and I never quite came to much of an agreement.
I spent my twenties doing what young men with good instincts and no particular credentials do - I made myself useful to people who needed someone presentable and easy to be around. I was good at it, I'm still good at it.
For the better part of a decade, I worked front-of-house at a private members' club in Tsim Sha Tsui, which is a polite way of saying I made sure the right people were comfortable and the wrong people never got through the door.
